Miedzyrzecz Fortified Zone
Back to Offroad Club Poland main page. The longest underground defensive system in the world can be found in the west of Poland. The fortifications near Miedzyrzecz known as Ostwall (East wall / MRU) were built by the Germans between 1934 and 1938 and then improved during the Second World War. This part of Europe was then part of Germany. The World War Two defensive system consists of multi-storey bunkers and underground tunnels. The route leads through bunkers and tunnels of the fortified group "Scharnhorst". A visitor center has been established at Kalawa, just south of Międzyrzecz (German: Meseritz). Visitors can chose between two routes one lasting 1.5 hours and the second 2.5 hours. The visitor centre has a permanent exhibition of military equipment, including tanks, guns, missiles, and weapons from the Second World War, and small gift shop. There is also an exhibition connected with the bats, which now make their home in the underground tunnels. Part of the underground site is known as the "Nietoperek Wild Life Sanctuary" and is the biggest winter quarter of bats in Europe. The underground system extends for many kilometres and only a tiny portion is accessible from the tourist visitor centre. For the more adventurous there are many more exciting underground sections to explore. Some say that the infamous amber room lies hidden somewhere in the extensive tunnel system. Come and visit. Maybe you'll even find some treasure! More about: Międzyrzecz
