The Range Rover is the top
luxury 4x4 (four wheel drive) model of Land
Rover. The Range Rover was built on a box section ladder type
chassis, much like the contemporary Series Land Rover, but utilised coil
springs as opposed to leaf springs, permanent four wheel drive, disc
brakes all round and powered by the lightweight Rover V8 engine of 3528
cc (3947 cc in later variants - and is now powered by a Jaguar V8 of 4.4
litres).
The Range Rover was the first
luxury 4x4 and continues to be one of the most luxurious sport utility
vehicles built. Despite the high level of luxury the Range Rover has
always been built with off-road capability foremost.
The original Range Rover model
introduced in 1970 is known as the Classic and continued in production
until 1994, when it was replaced by the second generation (P38A). This
second generation Range Rover was even more luxurious and
technologically much improved. The latest third generation Range Rover
was introduced in 2003 and saw the model move even further up-market. In
2005 an all-new sports tourer 4x4, the Range Rover Sport, powered by a
4.2-litre supercharged V8 engine, and is priced to fit between the new
Land Rover LR3 (Discovery) and the Range Rover, was introduced to
widespread critical acclaim.
The Range Rover was the first
luxury 4x4 and continues to be one of the most luxurious sport utility
vehicles built. Despite the high level of luxury the Range Rover has
always been built with off-road capability foremost, and many would say
that the Range Rover is the finest offroader in the world. The one
drawback for many owners is the heavy thirst of the Range Rover petrol engines
and the high cost of servicing through Land Rover dealerships.
